Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in his nightly address that the situation in the east, including Bakhmut, was “very tough.” But he repeated his determination to destroy the Russian military, adding that eastern Ukraine was where “the future of all Ukrainians is being fought for.”
Russian forces have made small gains near Bakhmut, but Ukrainian forces have prevented their foes from encircling them, according to the Ukrainian military and the Institute for the Study of War, a Washington think tank, which cited geolocated footage. The Russian advances are near the T0504, a highway that serves as an essential supply route to Ukrainian forces, the think tank said.
